It’s because communicating with leadership requires a different approach.
❌ Don't use the STAR method.
It’s great for explaining your work to a hiring manager who wants to hear the details of how you get things done. But leadership wants something else.
They want to hear:
✅ What – So What – Now What.
This framework speaks directly to the top-level thinking of executives. They don’t need all the gritty details. They need to understand what you did, why it mattered, and what the outcome was. The other way to think about it Why it cannot be later.
Let’s break it down:
🚫 Instead of saying:
“I built a fraud prevention feature that used machine learning to detect suspicious activity. We ran multiple iterations, reduced fraud by 30%, and increased customer trust.”
✅ Say this:
“As the Product Manager, I led the development of a fraud prevention feature to address rising fraud rates, which threatened customer trust and impacted revenue. The feature leveraged machine learning to detect suspicious patterns in real time. This initiative reduced fraud by 30%, restoring customer confidence and safeguarding $5M in potential losses over the next quarter.”
By shifting your communication to focus on the bigger picture, you’ll show leadership that you think at their level.
Next time you interview with executives, don't just explain how you did the work—show them why it matters and how it impacts the future.
If you do, you’ll walk out of those final interviews with confidence.
