If you are interviewing for AI Governance roles in 2026, expect the same question at every level. But the answer they want depends on the level you are targeting.
Here is the question:
“You find harmful outputs a few hours before launch. What do you do?”
Here is how the focus changes at each level.
Level 1
Analyst
Can you handle one risk well?
- →Scope it. What happened, who is affected, and how bad is it?
- →Save the evidence
- →Escalate to the right owner
- →Write down what was decided and why
Level 2
Manager
Now the focus shifts to the process.
“Leadership wants to skip the review to hit the launch date.”
- →What would make a short-term exception OK?
- →Who signs off on the risk?
- →When does the exception expire?
- →What do you watch after launch, and what triggers a rollback?
Level 3
Director
Now the focus is alignment and the business decision.
“Big revenue launch. Serious risk signals are still open. Brief key stakeholders and get alignment.”
- →Lead with your recommendation
- →Give the options and trade-offs, including not launching
- →Name what is non-negotiable
- →Name who owns the risk that's left
- →Say what would make you pull it back
Same question. Different focus.
- The analyst owns one risk.
- The manager owns the process.
- The director owns how much risk the company is willing to take.
An AI Governance interview is not about reciting NIST and the EU AI Act. Frameworks are the vocabulary. How you apply them and the decisions you make are what count.
Try this before your next interview
Take one question and answer it at all three levels. It will help you see which level you are really ready for.
